About
Founded 2009 by Sonia Spadaro (trained sommelier) and Riccardo Mulone, whose family moved to Etna from Enna in the 1950s and began experimenting with their own grapes in the 1980s. First vines planted in Contrada Nave at 1,100 meters AMSL. Outside the Etna DOC, Grecanico Dorato produces the Millesulmare; a metodo classico sparkler is produced from a cooler part of the same vineyard. From the spent volcanic crater Monte Ilice on the southeast slope, the estate makes a single-vineyard Etna Rosso from prephylloxera and old-vine Nerello. Relic varieties discovered among the Nerello while working with previous owner Don Alfio are now being propagated. 5 hectares across Contrade Nave and Monte Ilice; vine training: alberello, Guyot, and cordon. Produces 10,000 bottles annually. Visits by request: vineyard tour, palmento tour, wine tasting, lunch, dinner. Small groups (<15). Wi-Fi, family and pet friendly. Languages: Italian, English. Wines to try: Millesulmare Grecanico Dorato, Calmarossa Etna Rosso, Tempesta Classic Method Spumante.
