Bonaccorsi: Etna's First-And-Always

Alice Bonaccorsi discusses her family’s ValCerasa estate — one of the first Etna wines imported to the US, via Marco de Grazia and Michael Skurnik in the late 1990s — her father’s shift from hobbyist doctor-winemaker to serious producer, and the Crucimonaci terroir.

Long before Etna was fashionable, Vincenzo Bonaccorsi was a small-town Sicilian doctor making wine for family and friends on the side. His daughter Alice pushed him to get serious in 1996, brought in a young Salvo Foti for advice, and by 1999 was pouring their red, ValCerasa, at Vinitaly — where Marco de Grazia tasted it and helped land it in New York, one of the very first Etna wines ever imported to the US. Alice talks about growing up eating grapes berry by berry under the vines, and why great Etna wine should taste like the vintage, not the winemaker.
