About
Founded 2001 by Andrea Franchetti. A finger of the 1947 lava flow points directly at the Chardonnay vineyard in Contrada Guardiola from the Strada Regionale Mareneve. After two decades nurturing vineyards between 550 and 1,000 meters AMSL, Franchetti and his team have an intuitive sense of how Nerello interprets Etna’s volcanic history. Portfolio includes five Nerellos from dramatically different epochs and elevations on the north slope, plus a Chardonnay and a Petit Verdot blend. The winery sponsors (but does not host) the annual Contrade dell’Etna tasting event, which since 2008 has created a collaborative space for producers, consumers, and press. 26 hectares across five contrade: Guardiola, Rampante, Porcaria, Sciara Nuova, and Chiappemacine. Vine training: alberello and Guyot. Produces 95,000 bottles annually. Visits by request: vineyard tour, winery tour, wine tasting. Small groups (<15). Wi-Fi, family and pet friendly. Languages: Italian, English. Wines to try: Passobianco Chardonnay, Passorosso Nerello Blend, Contrada Guardiola, Contrada Chiappemacine, Franchetti Petit Verdot Blend.
