About
Founded 2007 by Trente Hargrave and Filip Kesteloot. Their path to Etna wound through the Italian Embassy in Pakistan, an art gallery in Belgium, and an impromptu cup of tea while vacationing in Sicily. First two visits to the estate were shrouded in rain clouds; on the second visit a momentary break in the mist revealed the amphitheater of terraces and old Nerello vines in Contrada Mollarella. Vineyard lies outside the DOC volcanic borders in white clay — cool, moist soils producing a darker, fruitier, softer Nerello Mascalese, a territory few producers have explored. After years making wines under the supervision of other wineries, opened their own boutique winery in Linguaglossa. Filip built the winery over several years while restoring buildings around Etna; Trente published a memoir. 3.5 hectares across three contrade: Mollarella, Arcuria, and Verzella. Vine training: alberello and cordon. Produces 4,000 bottles annually. Visits by request: vineyard tour, winery tour, wine tasting. Small groups (<15). Wi-Fi. Languages: Italian, Dutch, English, French, German. Wines to try: Dayini Bianco Carricante, Nerello Mascalese Rosso.
