About
Founded 1860. The Scammacca family has made wine on Mount Etna for generations. The modern winery took a major step forward in 1969 when broad terraces of new vines were planted above Santa Venerina on the volcano’s eastern side. Michele Scammacca is the winemaker. Through the 1970s and 1980s the estate focused on premium quality wines from Sicilian and international varieties. By 1989 the estate had developed a bottle-fermented Nerello in both bianco and rosato styles. Two decades later, the Etna DOC added the Etna Spumante category based on Scammacca’s work. The estate operates as Tenuta San Michele and includes an agriturismo with views of the Valle del Bove and the southeast slope. 55 hectares across Contrade Cancelliere and San Michele; vine training: cordon. Produces 250,000 bottles annually. Visits seven days a week: vineyard tour, winery tour, palmento tour, wine tasting, lunch, dinner. Small (<15) and large (25+) groups. Event space, Wi-Fi, overnight accommodations, family and pet friendly. Languages: Italian, English, French, German. Wines to try: Etna Bianco, Brut Etna Spumante, Pinot Nero, Cabernet Sauvignon.
