Enrico and Giulia Monteleone (father and daughter) farm vineyards in one of the few places on Etna’s north slope that lava has not touched in millennia — alluvial fields below the medieval town of Castiglione di Sicilia, where Nerello and Alicante grow beside the ruins of a Byzantine church, La Cuba. A prephylloxera Nerello from Contrada Pontale Palino and a Carricante from the steep slopes of Sant’Alfio have recently joined the portfolio. Winemaker Benedetto Alessandro works with the family.
