About
Founded 2007 by Guido Coffa, who purchased the estate in Contrada Monaci, Zafferana Etnea. The palmenti and buildings have been restored and converted into private cottages and a boutique country hotel called Monaci delle Terre Nere, at the edge of the 1634 lava flow. The name Monaci means monks — for centuries the monasteries around Zafferana Etnea served the parish and pilgrims, and the grounds were managed under the auspices of the church. In the nineteenth century the property was reallocated and eventually abandoned before Coffa’s acquisition. The estate operates as an organic farm. 2 hectares in Contrada Monaci; vine training: alberello and cordon. Produces 9,000 bottles annually. Visits by request: vineyard tour, palmento tour, wine tasting, cocktail bar, lunch, dinner. Small (<15) and large (15+) groups. Event space, Wi-Fi, overnight accommodations, helipad, family and pet friendly. Languages: Italian, English. Wines to try: Etna Bianco, U' Ranaci Grenache Noir, Etna Rosso.
