About

Founded early 1900s. In 1997, Massimiliano Calabretta — professor of electrical power systems at the University of Genoa — and his father Massimo established a facility to begin bottling wines from the family’s vineyard holdings. Father and son have progressively adopted more intimate and less invasive strategies as they studied the vines and how treatments and containers affect the wines over time. Portfolio includes the only pure Minella Bianca produced on the mountain, fermented alone without Carricante or Catarratto. Also produces a Pinot Nero from eight different clones and a pure Nerello Cappuccio. Most wines bottled as IGT Terre Siciliane and Vino da Tavola, with one Etna Rosso DOC. 10 hectares across seven contrade: Calderara, Calderara Sottana, Feudo di Mezzo, Passopisciaro, Solicchiata, Battisti/Zocconero, and Taccone. Vine training: alberello, Guyot, and cordon. Produces 60,000 bottles annually. Visits by request: vineyard tour, winery tour, palmento tour, wine tasting. Small groups (<15). Family and pet friendly. Languages: Italian, English. Wines to try: Gaio Gaio Vino Rosso, Piede Franco Vino Rosso, Pinot Nero.
