About

Founded 1968 by Peppina and Francesco Modica in Contrada Sciara Nuova, Randazzo, coinciding with the early establishment of the Etna DOC. Stony vineyard surrounded by olive and fruit trees. Led today by Salvatore Modica. The pure Etna DOP Nerello is named Nonno Ciccio, after Salvatore Modica’s grandfather and co-founder of the farm. White wines blend Carricante with 40% Grecanico. Reds made from Nerello Mascalese; Terre dei Modica Rosso includes a small percentage of Grecanico. Salvatore ferments two reds in an open lava-stone vat before pressing to stainless steel vats and barriques for aging — one of the last estates on the mountain to ferment this way legally. 2.5 hectares in Contrada Sciara Nuova; vine training: alberello and cordon. Produces 15,000 bottles annually. Visits by request: vineyard tour, winery tour, palmento tour, wine tasting. Small groups (<15). Family and pet friendly. Languages: Italian. Wines to try: Nonno Ciccio Etna Rosso, Sciauro Bianco, Terre dei Modica Rosso.
