Around Y2K the Grasso family moved from their farm in Dagala del Re on Mount Etna’s fertile eastern flank to a sunnier farm in Contrada Calderara, requiring years of clearing brambles, salvaging the old house, exposing and retraining vines, and pruning olive and fruit trees. When the land was finally clear, it revealed itself as almost entirely rock — one of the most coveted viticultural areas on the mountain. Mariarita Grasso leads the estate, and the family grows approximately 90% of their own food.
