About
Founded 2002 by Piero Portale. The Portale family has grown wine in Contrade Setteporte and Spadatrappo on Etna’s southern flank near Biancavilla for generations. In the nineteenth century the estate produced bulk wines for local and export markets. Masseria Setteporte was founded on a selection from their own vines. Drought- and disease-resistant rootstocks were chosen to limit vigor in favor of flavor. Reds: Nerello Mascalese with a small quantity of Nerello Cappuccio. Whites: Carricante with one-third Catarratto. For the first several vintages, a consulting cantina guided production; wine production has since returned to the estate. 10 hectares; vine training: alberello and cordon. Produces 30,000 bottles annually. Visits by request: vineyard tour, palmento tour, winery tour, wine tasting, lunch. Small groups (<15). Languages: Italian, English, Spanish. Wines to try: N'Ettaro Etna Bianco, Etna Rosso, Nerello Mascalese.
