About

Founded 1778. One side of the family made wine since the 1600s, the other since 1725. Irene Badala was two years old on her first visit to the family vineyard in Contrada Santo Spirito; every vintage, the family drove from Acireale to Passopisciaro. When the vineyard became more than the family could handle, there was talk of selling — but Irene refused. She and her husband Matteo initially sold the grapes. A representative from the winery buying their Nerello gave them a sample of the resulting wine and offered to help them get started. Within a few years they were releasing small batches of single-vineyard Carricante and Nerello from Contrada Santo Spirito. 3 hectares in Contrada Santo Spirito; vine training: alberello in cordon. Produces 6,300 bottles annually. Visits by request: vineyard tour, wine tasting. Small groups (<15). Family and pet friendly. Languages: Italian, English. Wines to try: Etna Bianco, Etna Rosso.
