When Firriato first set sights on Etna vineyards in Contrada Verzella, it began as a trial for wine grapes; Federico Lombardo di Monte Iato, son-in-law of founders Salvatore and Vinzia di Gaetano, led the development. Twenty years later the vineyards along the northern edge of an ancient lava flow are the full Cavanera estate, with an ultramodern welcome center, a resort with pool, and a wine bar overlooking the vineyards.
