Founded 1999. When Firriato company first set sights on Etna vineyards in Contrada Verzella, it began as a trial for wine grapes. Federico Lombardo di Monte Iato, son-in-law of founders Salvatore and Vinzia di Gaetano, led the development. Twenty years later the vineyards along the northern edge of an ancient lava flow are now the full Cavanera estate, with an ultramodern welcome center housing the new winery, a resort with pool, and a wine bar overlooking the vineyards. Soils change frequently between deep volcanic sands spiced with iron, white quartz, and volcanic scree. 42 hectares across four contrade: Santo Spirito, Sant’Antonio, Verzella, and Montedolce. Vine training: alberello and cordon. Produces 120,000 bottles annually. Visits seven days a week (seasonal): winery tour, wine tasting, lunch, dinner. Small (<15) and large (15+) groups. Overnight accommodations, family friendly. Languages: Italian, English, French. Wines to try: Gaudensius Blanc de Noir Brut Etna Spumante, Ripa di Scorciavacca Etna Bianco, Rovo delle Coturnie Etna Rosso.
