About

Etna project founded 2016 by the Donnafugata estate (Rallo family, founded 1983 in Marsala). The youngest vineyard in Contrada Montelaguardia sits on older Ellittico volcano soils, drier and receiving light earlier than other areas of the mountain. In Contrada Marchesa — the highest vineyard at around 900 meters AMSL — prephylloxera and old-vine Nerello are surrounded on three sides by the 1566 lava flow; mounds of cooled lava block light for hours, producing more elegant fruit. Winemaker Nino Santoro led years of trial vinifications from various mountain sites before committing to the estate’s direction. 15 hectares across four contrade: Montelaguardia, Campo Re, Allegracore, and Marchesa. Vine training: alberello and cordon. Produces 91,000 bottles annually. Visits by request: vineyard tour, winery tour, wine tasting, brunch. Small (<15) and large (15+) groups. Family friendly. Languages: Italian, English. Wines to try: Sul Vulcano Etna Bianco, Sul Vulcano Etna Rosso, Fragore Etna Rosso.
