About

Founded 1897. In 2002, Antonio Destro — previously in the marble business for two decades — discovered a partially abandoned winery and amphitheater of terraces with vines and olive trees while foraging for mushrooms on the northern flank in Montelaguardia. He purchased the vineyards and old palmento that year. In 2003 he planted 45,000 vines, of which rabbits ate 7,000. In 2006, Antonio and enologist Giovanni Rizzo made a test run with a selection of grapes. Full production began in 2007, focusing on indigenous cultivars and Etna DOC blends, including a line of classic method sparkling wines from Nerello Mascalese. Sciarakè is 100% Nerello Mascalese.
