About

Founded 1815. The Scilio family has made wine in the hills outside Linguaglossa for five generations. Original gravity-operated palmento built in 1815; Carricante and Nerello almost always sold in bulk with a portion set aside for the family. At the end of the twentieth century, the family pursued a modern course: old alberelli reorganized into filare and trained on tension wires, new plantings added, and the palmento transformed into a modern winery with new equipment, cooling system, bottling line, and subterranean barrel room. Portfolio includes Etna DOC wines, a Nero d’Avola, and Sikelios — a red passito from an unknown black grape variety planted generations ago. Salvatore Scilio deliberately refrains from DNA analysis of the mystery grape, saying not knowing adds a layer to the story.
